Renovating a home can be an exciting adventure, but it can also be a stressful one, especially if you’re new to it. There are many reasons for people wanting to do home renovations – some people might just want to give their own home a new look, while others may buy a house with the sole intention of renovating it and then flipping it for a profit. No matter what your motivation for home renovation may be, there are always a few things you should do, and a few you should avoid doing. Keep reading to learn more.
6 absolutely need-to-know tips to help you gameplan and organize home renovations
You should . . . fix plumbing and electrical problems
One of the first things you should do when it comes to home renovations is to make sure that the house is safe enough to work in. Two big safety factors that you should look at are the plumbing and electrical wiring of the house. If something is wrong with one of these things, it could have disastrous consequences such as a burst pipe or a fire. Even if the plumbing and electrical wiring appear to be fine, it’s always best to contact a professional to help determine whether there are any problems and to fix them if there are, as these problems are not always apparent. Besides, it’s always a good idea to have details for a plumber and electrician in your area. You should . . . work on the garden
One important thing to note is that home renovations don’t only refer to the home itself, but also the outside of it. That includes the garden. If you bought a neglected house, chances are that the garden is also neglected, so you need to start cleaning it up as soon as possible. If you want to sell the house, having a gorgeous garden will certainly be a selling point.
You should . . . make structural changes if necessary
The structure of a house is perhaps the most important factor that you need to consider when renovating. After all, there’s no use in a house being beautifully redone if it isn’t structurally sound and could collapse at any moment. If there are any signs that the house is structurally unsound, you should work on fixing that before you do anything else. If you are renovating a home that you live in or plan on living in, it’s a good idea to consider whether you want any extra rooms in the house, so that you can have those built on while you are busy with renovations. You shouldn’t . . . give yourself too little time
Home renovations generally take a lot of time, and as anyone in the business will tell you, they often take longer than expected. You should therefore give yourself enough time to get it all out of the way – this may mean organizing alternative living arrangements for a bit so that you have peace of mind during the renovations. You can also use this handy home renovation timeline to estimate how long your renovations will take.
You shouldn’t . . . start with the aesthetics
While it may be tempting to immediately start making your home look gorgeous, these things need to wait until last. Why? Because you don’t want to go through all the trouble of painting your house only to have to break down walls. Nor do you want to redo your flooring only to rip it up again so that plumbing, wiring, or structural changes can be made. No, it’s best to wait until all of the big tasks have been done before you tackle the smaller things that focus on making the home look gorgeous. Once those are out of the way, you can start doing the fun things. Just be sure that when it is time to paint, you follow these tips to make it easier for you.
You shouldn’t . . . use the first contractor you come across
It’s never a good idea to simply talk to one contractor and decide to use them for your home renovations. Instead, ask around and get quotes from different contractors so that you can be sure you are getting the best deal possible and not spending more money than necessary.

Thanks for letting me know that I should start with the more essential amenities first when renovating a home and then move on to the aesthetics. That should make it so that I don’t have to redo everything over and over again every time I missed something. My parents recently passed away and I inherited their old home. The place is really old and I thought it would be a good idea to renovate it and make it homier so that my family and I can move in. I’ll be sure to take your advice and find myself a good contractor that can help me with the renovation process as well.
