The time has come for you to move and after all of your research and effort finding a new home, your mind is likely jumbled. Need some help remembering what steps you need to take next? Read on for a list of the top five things to do before you move.
Top 5 Things to do Before You Move
Research Movers
Not all movers are created equal! If you have expensive furniture, you want to be sure that your moving company will treat your furniture like their own. Find a reliable mover that has a first-rate history and reviews. If you have already made friends with your new neighbors, ask them who they used and if they were satisfied. If not, maybe you want to check out MyBekins.com or a local moving company, regardless of whom you choose, reliability is important!
Change your address on everything
Think about everywhere your address needs to be changed. Recurring charges, bank statements, utilities, subscriptions… all need to have your address changed. If you plan on using your old home as a rental like RentalCity.ca, be sure to fill out a mail forward form at the post office while your home sits vacant. Doing this all ahead of time will alleviate stress so that you can focus on unpacking your new home!
Explore your neighborhood
Take time to explore your new neighborhood before moving in. Finding out where restaurants, activities, and food stores are will help greatly when you’ve been unpacking all day and need to eat. Or when you’ve finished unpacking and need to get your overly excited children out of the house!
Pack an essentials box
Before moving, pack an essentials box. Fill it with pajamas, toothbrushes, cleaning products, all the essentials you will need on your first day and night at your new home. That way, you don’t have to feel the need to get everything unpacked in a day, you can take your time knowing your essentials will be unpacked easily. Don’t forget to place bills or important paperwork in there that you may need within the first month of moving.
Make arrangements with your child’s new school
If changing school districts, familiarize yourself with your child’s new school and district. Have all forms filled out and ready to go for the transfer and ask what curriculum your child’s grade has been learning so you can make sure you are on the same page. If you are moving and can not immediately attend school, find an online course such as eng4u online course to keep your child updated on their schooling.
Moving doesn’t have to be stressful. Make sure to take the stress out of this new step in life with these five things to do before you move. If you stay organized and try to complete tasks before moving into your new home, all that will be left is unpacking and enjoying your new neighborhood!
