As far as Christmas trees go, we don’t always have the best track record, but we have managed to sort one genius holiday win that has become our favorite decorating tradition: the kids’ Christmas tree. My husband was inspired to give this idea a go a few years ago, and I am so glad he did. We all now love having this tree in our home and have learned a few tricks to make it an easy success. Read on for the scoop and a cool chance to win a sweet $100 gift card to Wayfair.com!
5 Tips for Putting Up a Kids’ Christmas Tree in Your Home:
- Get a CHEAP tree. Listen, the kids won’t care if it’s fancy or simple, and chances are they might not be the most gentle when excitedly tossing ornaments on the branches. Grab something inexpensive and if gets a little beat up over the years, you won’t care. My husband was super smart about this and bought one on clearance after Christmas the year before he wanted to start this tradition.
- Make sure the tree is pre-lit. Trying to wrap lights around a tree and making sure all the bulbs work while the kids “help”? Not fun. Just trust me on this one and get one with the lights ready to go.
- Also, go for a tree that isn’t too much taller than your tallest kiddo. While they will grow over the years, the idea is for the kids to decorate it themselves. And kids, step stools, and ornaments aren’t a happy combination. Make it easy for them by keeping the tree at their level.
- Use the ornaments from your family tree that have seen a bit of wear along with the PILES of homemade ornaments the kids bring home from school each year. This is the perfect use for them! Never give your kids anything breakable or any meaningful ornaments you want to take special care of–save these for your family tree.
- Give the kids their ornaments, let them loose on the tree and LEAVE. If you’re anything like me, if you stay in the room, you’ll be tempted to direct their decorating efforts. If you allow them to completely decorate the tree on their own, they will take such pride in their efforts. This year, our kids were so excited to show us their tree when it was finished!

I seriously only just heard about this the other day, but admit the upside tree is now intriguing me more than ever. That said, I am a “Douglas Fir” tree kind of girl, so the Douglas Fir 7.5′ Green Fir Artificial Christmas Tree with 650 LED White Lights with Stand honestly caught my eye. But that is just me 😉

Love, love, love the idea of a kids tree! Thanks for the great idea. As for the upside down tree, it’s different. Though I prefer a natural tree, I have to say I really like the 9’Crystal White Artificial Upside Down Christmas Tree with Clear Lights. It’s really fun!

I like the 7.5′ Green Artificial Christmas Tree with 650 Dura-Lit Clear lights. It would look like it was crashing through our roof! The kids would get a big kick out of that!!
Heather Svajdlenka says
We started a kids tree last year when my son was 1. Ours is just a very small table top so i’m sure it will have to be upgraded at some point, but each year he will get a new ornament to hang on the tree (as well as his sister when they arrive) so it may be bare for a few years, but i’m sure it will get full very quickly!
Amber Manion says
I would bdo the 7.5 foot green tree with 650 Dura-lit clear lights. We do the tree as a family each year. I would be afraid that my toddler would be trying to swing from an upside down tree. Lol

The 6′ champange pre lit is lovely. My 5 kids would love the idea of an upside down christmas tree. I let them re-decorate our christmas tree multiple times throughout the christmas season. They have so much fun.

The 7.5ft Upside down Champagne artificial christmas tree really caught my eye. It would look so pretty with gold and red ornaments!
As for the kids christmas tree we do something similar we have a smallish tree in our kitchen with pink and purple ornaments and candy themed ones. My daughter’s love to decorate it and look forward to it every year.

5.5 Green spruce is my fav. Not to big or to small. Just perfect size.

An upside-down Christmas tree? Crazy town! We also have a kids’ Christmas tree but it’s getting pretty worn. So I could replace it with the “Grand Teton 3′ Green Tear Drop Artificial Christmas Tree” – hmmmmmmm….
Thanks for the giveaway!

Lael says
Half Upside Down 6′ White Artificial Christmas Tree (actually, I liked the corner tree in the article better, but couldn’t find it in the list). A little surprised nobody mentioned portals – lots of half trees, upside down on gamer sites.
Kim Bongiorno says
The 9′ silver one, of course! Sparkly is THE BEST.
Michelle Grewe says
A. The tear drop one. And at 33 bucks, with most options out of stock, I might just go ahead and buy it. But I’m kind of obsessed with tear drops as an artist. So…
Grand Teton 3′ Green Tear Drop Artificial Christmas Tree
B. I do the kid’s tree too. Mainly because I don’t want their homemade ornaments on my pretty tree. I worked 2 years in Stone & Thomas’s Christmas Store back in high school, decorating all the trees for display. I. Just. Can’t. with those ornaments they bring home from school.
Sarah Parisi says
I like the champagne one.
Amy Flory says
How fun! If I’m turning my tree upside down, I’m changing the color, too, so it’s the 6 ft champagne tree for me.
Tim says
I really like the look of the silver tree they have. I have always wanted a white tree, but always settle for green. Now I just have to talk my wife into getting one that is upside down!!
