***This post is sponsored by C2 Paint, which truly made all the difference in the success of our bed and bath renovation project. Read on to find out why!***
If you’ve hung with me for any bit of time, you know that our home is a constant work-in-progress. More accurately stated, it’s a mess-in-process, but hey, why mince words when you can make yourself sound less desperate? In any case, the time had come, friends. The time had come to say adios to the spackled-up patches on our bedroom walls and our sad little bathroom sink held bravely together with duct tape. Yes, my husband and I were going to go for it.
A weekend, a plan and a bed and bath renovation project.
Our goals? Gut (minus the shower stall which would be left in place) the teeny little bathroom off the side of our bedroom, smooth out the holes in the wall, and paint the bathroom and the bedroom. Because we were feeling indulgent and because the curtain rods had been precariously bent and dangling from the wall for some years now, we decided to polish things off with some new rods and curtains. And oh, some updated artwork/pictures for the walls. Not that the mystic garden prints we scored at yardsale in 2001 for a $1/piece weren’t breath-taking, but…
How to rock a bed and bath renovation project in a weekend:
- Get rid of the kids. It seems like such a sad waste of the kids’ annual visit to their grandparents to spend it working our tails off, but since this project was a big undertaking that would leave us without a toilet, sink, or usable bed for a few days, it seemed the most sane choice. If you can swing shooing the little ones away, go for it.
- Snatch up the goods. We kicked off the fun with a date night to Lowe’s to buy all the zillions of things we’d need for our renovation. The list was loooong, and by the time we made all our purchases we were so wiped, we decided to forego dinner and settled for Chinese take-out. I know, we so know how to roll the romance. But the rest of the weekend? Ours to stay home and tackle the project.
- Get rid of the crap and prep for the new. First things first. Gut the bathroom of all the old, and say goodbye to the toilet, vanity, medicine cabinet, and cheap press-on tiles. Toss the old curtains, rods, and random garden prints. Pull nails from the walls and wipe them down to prep for painting.
- Install the big stuff. This was all my husband, I won’t lie. I wouldn’t have the first clue how to install a toilet if my life depended on it. He’s boss at this stuff, and for this, I’m so grateful.
- Paint with a really, really good paint. We have far too often made the mistake of going cheap when it comes to paint, and now avoid the more low-grade brands. However, the weekend of our renovation, we learned a new lesson. When painting, always use really, really quality paint, like C2 paint. Is it worth it? YES! Because it’s such top-quality product, we were able to completely skip priming. And the paint went on so smoothly and quickly, which saved us HOURS, allowing us to pull off our bed and bath renovation project in the course of a single weekend. Also? It looks gorgeous. C2 premium products blend leading-edge technology with finely ground artist-grade pigments to create paint with exceptional vibrancy and coverage. Superb application properties (seriously, I have never had a paint lay down more smoothly!) give all C2 products a smooth, beautiful finish that’s both elegant and durable. Even better, it’s earth-friendly: using a low-VOC formula qualifies C2 paint for LEED credits. I also loved the online color palette tool, which allows you to compare and contrast easily different hues and shades of the colors you are considering for your home. There is also a retail locator if you prefer to shop in person versus ordering online, but the site is very user-friendly and full of fantastic quality paint choices!
- Finally, polish off your hard work by installing the new hardware and decor accents. Put up that shiny new brushed nickle towel-rack, hang those curtains and freshly framed pics (or, in our case, hang everything up but the newly photos, and continue to aggressively stalk the UPS man for the prints you ordered using a sweet Shutterfly deal)
I’d say kick back, relax, and enjoy your hard work, but…the kids are now home. So just take quick pause on your umpteenth run upstairs to settle the kids in bed for the night and to gaze at the gorgeousness. Know that someday, maybe eighteen years-ish someday from now, you’ll have a chance to relax in the new oasis you created!
