As a general rule, I consider it a victory if I get my children to their annual pediatrician appointments semi-on-time, with only periodic temper tantrums and at least half of my hair pulled back into a semblance of a ponytail. I’m not sure why, but it’s as if my general incapacity for orderly functioning all comes to a ferocious head when it’s time for a doctor’s appointment. Perhaps nature’s way of reinforcing I can maintain my Mom of the Year title.
In any case, I am a disaster at my kids’ appointments, but…but I’m always uber-proud to report to the doctor that yes, the kids have been taking their daily vitamins. The doctor first told me to start giving my children multivitamins when they were very young, and we’ve always stuck to this. I may forget a paper for school, or a shoelace might be loose, but somehow, we rarely forget those vitamins before heading out the door.
It makes sense: my mother was a stickler for daily vitamins. Then, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become a bit “elaborate” with my own vitamin and supplement taking. I research and pursue many different pills to help enhance my health. My friends make fun of me for it, and I can’t say that my husband is always pleased trying to jam the refrigerator door shut around the ginormous bottle of fish oil I keep in there. But I think vitamins are incredibly important.
Head over to the OTCSafety website to read this article and get more information about vitamin and mineral supplements, and note these key facts:
- Vitamins are essential for good health through every stage of life. Our bodies require a broad variety of vitamins and minerals to function properly, yet it can be challenging to get all the nutrients we need from food alone.
- All of us likely strive to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and exercise but for many of us, we can continue to rely on vitamins and minerals to fill nutritional gaps and enhance health.
This last point is exactly why I am sure taking vitamins is the right move for my family. I try really hard to make sure they eat different fruits and veggies and balance their food groups, but my son is loath to drink milk and my daughter is stuck in a ginormous apple fan craze. The thing is, despite my best efforts, my kids will never eat perfectly. I will never be able to feed them perfectly to make sure that they are getting all the nutrients they need.
So rather than take a risk that they are missing something important, I’m going to keep encouraging their love of gummy vitamins. Sure, we will still attack our fruits and veggies and shoot for a balanced diet, but I feel really better knowing that daily multivitamins are getting our back.
Every morning, I dump out a pile of their vitamins on the counter, and my kids excitedly beeline to the pile to pick out their two for the day. And that’s fine with me, kiddos. Keep attacking those vitamins with a vengeance!

As the mom of one extremely picky eater, the need for daily vitamins is HUGE in my home! I am so with you on this one…I fail in many areas, but not this one! Now pass me my tiara! ;)-Ashley
