Long about a month ago, we were casually hanging around the family dinner table when my sister nonchalantly dropped The Bomb, “Yeah, so we are pregnant and having a baby.”
Clatter my fork to the floor, this was HUGE! A sea of adorable squeeing and congratulations burst forth as we celebrated the fantastic news, but then it was quickly time to get us down to brass tacks. There were serious issues that had to be addressed.
“When?”, I needed to know.
“December 23, but scans are suggesting that may be a couple days early, so…Christmas ” my sister replied.
I stared at my her in confusion, “Why did you pick then?”.
“We didn’t exactly pick it.”
“Well I guess you’re not hosting Christmas dinner.”
“Meredith!”
I never said grace was my forte.
“Well, you won’t be. That’s fine. I just need to order more tablecloths. And is it a boy or a girl?”
“We don’t know yet.”
“I need to know. Is there a doctor I can call?”
“Does it matter that much?”
“I just don’t know if they make matching Aunt tees/baby onesies sets for boys. I may have to special order if so, and want to leave enough time.”
“You do understand that I am the one pregnant?”
“Well, sort of, but really, it’s all of us. And the way I see it, my role is sort of the most paramount because I’m the aunt.”
You see, in important matters like this, I find it imperative to keep a logical perspective on all fronts. She has no idea what’s going on since she’s silly with pregnancy hormones.
We even took care of naming the baby for her, thanks to my son. Drawing from his fav show, 3-2-1 Penguins, “Kevin” was an easy choice, and honestly, given that the other penguins’ names in the program are Zidgel, Midgel, and Fidgel, I think my sister lucked out. He still hasn’t decided whether a last name is necessary, but after ruling out inane options like “Watermelon” and “Donald Duck”, my son is 100% affirmative that Kevin’s middle name be “Green Bean.” Kevin will be the set name for either a boy or a girl, by the way; a hip new unisex name, if you will.
So, dear sister, you’ll have to excuse all the socially graceless questions and the fact that your child’s initials will be KGB. All this fabulousness comes from us being so very excited to welcome little Kevin to the family. And my desperate attempts to plan the Christmas table cloths? An act of love as I work to make room for the sweetest extension of the woman I love most on this earth.
Happy aunt to me, but really, always, happy baby to beautiful you.

Unbelievable that she’s squirming her way out of hosting Christmas at her house. Typical excuse. It would be awesome of her to at least hire a caterer well in advance so that you don’t have to bear the burden all alone.
Totally kidding…CONGRATS to you Auntie Mer!!! Oh and to your sister and her family, I’m sure they’re very excited too. 😉
