As I sit here, buried under piles of wrapping paper and unsigned Christmas cards while scowling at the UPS man for failing to deliver the packages I ordered yesterday (gosh, why even feel tickled with myself over the free expedited shipping promo code I found??), it has occurred to me that I may have already lost the “magic of the season”.
As it is only December 3, I am therefore screwed. Or am I…? While the miracle of Jesus’ birth always stuns me, I am no longer in awe over the cheery holiday radio tunes or the exorbitant number of plastic Santas that my children somehow repetitively drag into our home. But, possibly, all is not lost. You see, a few years ago, my sister and I started a little tradition. We meet at the mall.
For one night during the Christmas season, we walk around the mall. I usually make her eat Zoup with me, as the place fascinates me. We then shop for some of the gifts she needs while I feel superior for already having finished my shopping. In finale, we end the evening by buying a coffee, sitting in the center of the mall and basking in the glow of all the hurried shoppers and obnoxiously bright light displays.
It. Is. Perfect.
And it’s tonight. It is very possibly the one time all season that I am able to pause and delight in some of the glory that is Christmas. All else might be unfortunately lost under mounds of un-iced sugar cookies and harried schedules, but I am grateful for tonight.
So you see, it’s a cause for a double celebration. A Christmas night out AND Finding the Funny? Even if you can’t snag a mall date, meet me here with Finding the Funny for a whole lot of fun funny, and together, we can take a moment “out”.
May the joy and magic of this season somehow find you, my friends. Laugh on.
