I’m pretty public about the fact that there is very little on this earth that gets me giddy-dancing like a good bargain. Sales, promos, Black Friday, online yardsaling…I’m there. So when the chance to get into the presale for the outgrown sale at my son’s preschool cropped up about a month ago, I was beyond ecstatic. I felt like my invite to the Emmys had arrived.
The only catch? I had to volunteer to help set-up for the sale. Lifting and grunting as I shoved heavy tables around with a bunch of ladies I had never met? No sweat! If the scent of a cheap pair of snow boots was in the air, count me in. As I was trying to look hiply cool while hefting book shelves and cursing myself under my breath for wearing my adorable new Sperrys instead of some practical sneaks, something very unusual happened…I met a friend.
Yes, you read that right. I met a friend.
Julia Sherwin, as it turns out, is a local fellow writer and mama to young ones, and it only took but a second before I realized I had just chanced upon a kindred spirit. Yay!!! She writes for our local paper, The Daily Local, about keeping a realistic perspective through this parenting journey. Check out her most recent article, “Frantic and Frenzied: How do We Learn Not to Sweat the Small Stuff” which hits the nail on the head of what so many of us parents are really working through.
She catalogues all of her articles on her website and is also building a Facebook community, Perspective on Parenting, where real issues that parents deal with can be discussed openly and honesty. You can also find her on Twitter.
As she describes in her “About” page, “Parenting is definitely a journey, not a destination. I’m a mom of three, also a former college journalism instructor and public relations professional, now using my writing as a platform to encourage dialogue about the many issues facing parents today. I’ve chosen to write about some of the highlights in my journey as a mom, with a healthy dose of reality, serious topics and fun.”
I know, right? I told you she was cool! I, however, am decidedly NOT cool, so what did I do about 5 minutes after meeting this gal? I called her up, asked her to come over to my house and vlog with me…true story.
So if you were starting to get nervous that I actually did have social skills after reading above that I had made a new friend. Fear not, I’m still as weird as the day is long. But Julia? She’s a delight. She humored me, came over, and together below we bring our vlog entry for the More than Mommies TMI Mixer. She even came up with these cool questions for this week!
Go meet her below, and then say something nice so she doesn’t totally regret her decision to hang out with me. And go visit and like Perspective on Parenting on Facebook so you can keep up with all the awesome Julia is sharing!
