I am not an easy person to get out of my house. There’s the whole social recluse thing, the fact that I think my couch is really comfortable, and that I would prefer to go to sleep every night at 7pm.
Despite these “please hang out with me” social cues, I had a sweet friend who was persistent. “We’re going to breakfast”, she said, “I am picking you up at 8am. You can wear your yoga pants, but try to make sure they are no more than 3 days-unwashed”. Okay, I may be improvising a bit, but the whole effort was rather forceful. And she did show up at my house at 8am.
Breakfast itself was the stuff of dreams. There were unreal things like hot coffee, no dishes to wash, and uninterrupted adult conversation. I think I let the bliss of the morning carry me away because as we went to check out, I spontaneously turned to my friend and said, “Do you want to stop at a yard sale on our way home?” While she worked to scrape her jaw off the floor in response to my unusual display of gregariousness, I took it to the next level, “We could even get more coffee.” Hey, when this Mom of the Year gets her party pants on, she goes all out.
So my good-natured, game-for-anything friend drove us to a yard sale. The stuff was all junk. It looked like gold to me. I must have surveyed that crappy picnic basket 10 times in the sheer awe of being able to shop sans kiddos.
Purchaseless, but seemily satiated, we buckled up in her car and jetted back towards home. As we saw my house looming closer however, I was struck with an unusual desire to explore the world outside my home.
Barely audible, I whispered, “Keep going.”
“What was that?”, she asked.
“Keep driving. There has to be another yard sale somewhere. We can find it. We can go. I’m just not ready to go home.”
My friend knows me. She knew her cards enough to know that complete silence was the best move. Pressing the pedal to the medal, we breezed pass my house and indeed, we found another yard sale.
I ended up finding a slammin’ Nerf gun for my son (or so my husband tells me – I still don’t get the awe-factor of Nerf guns), but moreover, I found a slice of sanity, fun and friendship for myself. All in all, I would say the morning was a TOTAL SCORE.
A very much two-yardsale kind of day. Living on the edge, my friends.
