Is it possible to say enough good things about sandwiches? They are so easy, quick and perfect for kids and great for on-the-go. But I don’t always love the calories that can go along with thick regular bread. Because of this, I was thrilled to be introduced to Flatout Flatbreads.
If you’re in the market for flatbread, this brand has got something for everyone–from minis to kid-sized to artisian pizza flatbreads to the new Flatout Hungry Girl Foldit Flatbreads. Because they are all flatbreads, the calorie count stays pretty low while you pack in a punch of fiber, grains and above all, flavor. I love the tagline for the new Flatout Hungry Girl Foldit Flatbreads, “Super Delish Guilt-free eating”. Sounds perfect to me! Best part is they are now are being sold at your local Walgreens, so you can grab some up quickly and bring them home for your next meal.
I was excited to try these flatbreads and make some new sandwiches, but I’m not very good with recipes. If you’re looking for something fancy, you’ll have to forgive me. What you see below is 100% made-up by my very non-chef-ish self, but I thought they were yummy!
I decided to stick with making two breakfast wraps to give myself some direction when shopping. I also planned to only make sandwiches that my kids would eat. Call me lazy, but our diet is pretty child-centered right now. Maybe someday I’ll conjure up enough energy to be one of those cool moms who makes something for her kids and then a fancier meal for the adults, but right now, it’s strictly a one-dish-suits-all scene around here.
So I hit the Walgreens grocery section with a purpose. Bring on the ingredients for some yummy flatbread wraps! After grabbing my flatbreads, I hit the refrigerated section to get the ingredients for the first sandwich I made. Some eggs, sausage and cheese later, I had everything I would need to put together a nice, warm wrap filled with my kids’ favorite breakfast foods.
Egg and Sausage Flatbread:
4 Flatout Hungry Girl Foldit Flatbreads
6 eggs (scarmbled in pan)
1 6.4 oz package of sausage (diced)
1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
Making this was easy. My new Orgreenic Kitchenware skillet cooked the eggs perfectly. After dicing up the sausage (small enough for little eaters) and adding some cheese, I put all the ingredients in the flatbread and breakfast was served! If you wanted to warm the sandwich a bit more, you could easily put it back in the pan and let it brown for a minute. You could also easily add your favorite veggies and swap out the sausage for a variation on this wrap.
For the second sandwich, I tried to create a (somewhat) healthier version of stuffed french toast (one of my favorite breakfast treats!). I had never made anything like this before, so it was a shot in the dark, but I figured, “How wrong can you go with strawberries and cream cheese?” I threw in some almonds and honey for good measure, and I was ready to give this sandwich a try!
Strawberries and Cream Flatbread
4 Flatout Hungry Girl Foldit Flatbreads
1 package of cream cheese
2 cups frozen strawberries, thawed
Vanilla and/or sugar to taste
2 Tbsp. of honey
1/2 cup of almonds, ground
I beat the cream cheese and strawberries in a bowl. For my personal preferrence, I wanted it to be sweeter, so I added a little vanilla and sugar, but you could skip this step. The mixture was also runnier than I would have preferred, as I forgot how much water frozen strawberries tend to retain. If making this again, I would probably use fresh strawberries. I smoothed 1/4 of the mixture on each flatbread, rolled it up and then drizzled the honey and almonds on top. It was delicious, truly. I loved the crunch of the almonds and counted it as an extra protein boost. I would definitely repeat this recipe!
Later this week you can score a chance to create your own Flatout Hungry Girl Foldit Flatbread sandwiches when I give away a gift card to Walgreens–stay tuned! For now, thanks for humoring me with my attempt at some oh-so-original original recipes. And if you’ve got an idea for a flatbread recipe, share it below. I really liked this product. The flatbreads were yummy, healthy and diet-friendly, so I’d love to hear about some more cool ideas for fun sandwiches.
