We are currently at the height of early toddlerhood grabbiness. It’s fantastic. You know how it goes. If it’s anything that can be touched, fondled, chewed on, picked up, put down, dropped, carried, thrown, my 15 mo. daughter is getting her hot little hands on it. And she’s getting her hands on it FAST. At best, this is totally annoying. It’s enough to make the most mentally well among parents want to set up shop in a padded cell without any small choking hazards or breakable objects.
My favorite is the extreme proclivity both of my children (while in this stage) developed for the feminine products I keep under our bathroom sink. I’m a huge fan of child-proofing your home (because, let’s be honest, it just makes it easier for us parents), but apparently, per my husband, there is some weird scenario with the under-sink cabinet in our bathroom that does not allow one of those handy latch things to be installed.
I recently read a suggestion in some parenting sourcebook that you should “simply keep children this age out of the bathroom”. Brilliant. Except…in real life, this doesn’t work out so well? In general, everything Mommy needs to do in the bathroom is more of a group affair. Hey, it’s loads more fun to flatiron your hair and take a dump with a back-up team, right?
Couple this extreme togetherness with the unlatchable cabinet, and it’s virtual sanitary product fest. My son was into spreading my tampons out all over the bathroom floor and separating them into piles.
My daughter is now choosing to channel her inner flower girl. She grabs a box of my pads and walks down the hall, tossing them out one-by-one as she goes. She is obviously practicing for an upcoming wedding of some sort. I just hope that I’m invited too.
By my estimation it’s a losing battle. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. My son outgrew his tampon phase relatively quickly. At least, he hasn’t requested to take any to his 3 yr. old preschool class’ show-n-tell…
