The lyrics of Eric Church’s “Springsteen” get me every time; “Funny how a melody sounds like a memory”. Who isn’t this true for? You start hearing a certain tune and a flood of memories of a particular time/place hits you like a ton of bricks.

My late mother was the Queen of the Golden Oldies scene. While the rest of the world was giving into the trend of Top Forty and Pop Rock, my mom was filling our kitchen with the likes of “Brown-Eyed Girl” and “Let’s Twist Again”. Go her, I say, for being a true throw-back, hold-out original. The unfortunate (because her death is still painful)/fortunate (because those songs are just plain fun) result is that every time I hear a ditty from the 50s/60s, I am overwhelmed with the recollection of those precious early years with my mother.
So I start to wonder about the legacy I’m passing onto my children. Gone are the days of radio, so I actually have to take full responsibility for the song selection my children hear. Enter the iPod. Enter the age of selecting a playlist. Currently, a lot of Eric Church and Queen. But not so sure that “Another One Bites the Dust” is a bad thing. View it as confidence-builder and a message to persevere, right? A vertiable modern-day Golden Oldie? 😉
