Labor Day. Ahh…a break from our jobs and work. A chance to cook-out, hang out with family and friends. A final, sweet goodbye to Summer and a welcoming in of Fall. It’s a great day; I love the potential to just relax a little (though you know it doesn’t always happen when you’re running after those kids!). Enjoy and celebrate in some way if you can.
For the psychotic planner within this Mom of the Year, today also signals that start of a very serious season (insert drumroll here…), the Pre-Holiday Shopping Season.

September 3 seems a little early to be hearing the chorus of Christmas carols? I’m not even hearing the carols yet, just the clink of change I’m saving by keeping my eyes peeled for deals and steals now. In truth, I start shopping for Christmas on 12/26. It may seem crazy (and probably is) but the money saved by snatching up a good bargain when you see it is huge. I don’t actively shop for my list prior to Labor Day, but if I’m out and about (as you know this happens so often 😉 ), and I see an item that would make the perfect gift, I’m buying it and saving it for the holidays. I do this casually throughout the year, but then make more of an intense effort to focus in on the rest of my list when Summer officially takes it’s leave.
The biggest pro of early bargain hunting is obviously the savings, though it is also very cool to have my holiday shopping done before the Christmas rush hits. I usually finish up sometime shortly after Black Friday–there’s no way I’m missing that bargain-scoring holiday! Downsides to being insane about my shopping include storage of the gifts (where exactly does one stash Christmas presents in May exactly?) and also with some purchases, there is a risk. I found the most sweet little apron for a friend. Only to find out a month later that she had just bought herself the most sweet little apron. So my gift would have been less applicable at this point…mmhhh, can you say “re-gift?”
But overall, I’m a fan. Bring on the early holiday bargain shopping, and then meet me in December at the mall for a gingerbread latte when everyone else is mad crazy rushing around in pursuit of that perfect gift. We’ll kick back and chill to the glow of the over-lit massive tree and the ring of “Carol of the Bells”.
