It’s pretty easy to constantly rag on the overwhelmingly difficult task of rearing young children, but there are definitely some highlights of my gig that shouldn’t be overlooked…
I’ve got a ready-made posse. And I don’t even have to pay them. My two children and my dog apparently have no conception of a life outside of a 2 ft. radius of Mommy. It’s cool–I’m never starved for physical contact. Plus, you know, I don’t have to do anything crazy like pee alone. Sure, wouldn’t mind a little “private time” once in a while, but I foresee that coming in spades when we hit those precious teenage years…
Yeah, we’re not running out of stuff to do… |
I never get bored. As in, ever. There is always something to do. I have to-do lists and alternate to-do lists if by some act of God, everything on the primary lists would get crossed off. I even have dream to-do lists for the things I will probably never, ever get around to doing in this lifetime, but who wouldn’t love to have an extra five minutes to scrub that nasty film off the coffee maker? Absolutely no shortage of activities. And if I could ever shut down my Type A and just relax, the kids are always, always up for some playtime with Mommy. Ante up for some tickle sessions and bubbles 🙂
I keep moving. All the time. I can hearken back to those pre-kid Sunday afternoons when we would get all lazy and I would be lucky to log just a few steps on my pedometer. This never happens now. Ever. Just going through our daily existence racks the step count up pretty high. And carrying around these children? My arms are buff. Fine, okay, my left arm alone is butch (why do we always, always heft the babies on the same side?), but at least I can see muscle definition on 50% of my arms, right?
I’ve even got my own personal laundry assistant 😉 |
I know things about the community. Perhaps not where the latest Saturday night hot-spots are, but for example, I know when Kidsfest is at the park, I’ve heard other moms gossip their thoughts about the new 6th grade center for the district, and I’m in the know about plans to open a new library. These are no earth-shattering things, but it makes me feel connected, which is always nice.
If I score a morning alone, I could ace out my errands at the speed of light. No, seriously. After knowing the weight of hitting Walmart (the equvalent of Hell on Earth, as far as I’m concerned) with kids, my motivation to slam out errand-type tasks if I am not encumbered with the little guys is high. If I’ve got no one screaming for animal crackers in the front of my cart, I can whip out my grocery store with amazing agility and speed. It’s a pretty awesome sight to behold.
So yeah, aside from the fact that the kids can just be so darn cute and sweet (at times–not all the time, let’s not get crazy here…), there are just some really, really good things about having children. Bring on the positives and the joys, I say 😉
