Did I miss some sort of National Cleaning Out Your Junk From Your Parents’ House Day? I thought I made pretty good pass at sorting/tossing all of my old stuff when I moved out. But recently my dad (who is doing an awesome job cleaning out and organizing the entire house), just gave me a bin of stuff that I had left behind. And I have an uncanny feeling that there is loads and loads more of this stuff stashed around his house.

It’s weird to sort through childhood memories. I’m very cognizant of not wanting to accumulate material belongings on this earth–especially those I don’t use. But pitching that once-beloved memorabilia? It’s like tossing your early years in the trash. You have memories that no one else ever will and it’s the goofy keychains from beach trips and name badges from your first summer job at Hersheypark that help make them a little more real.
So what do you do with all of the keepsakes? Save or shed? It’s a tough one. Honestly, with this last round of “memories” it was an easier call to make as a mouse turds were decorating at least one corner of the bin…eek, I know! Sans mouse crap though, I’m never sure. Honestly, how many times will I pull the junk out and give it a nostalgic sort-through? And even more realistically, saddling my kids with the stuff when I pass on seems kind of cruel. But…letting go of my precious early BFF notes, mmhh…
Someone, help a girl out. There has to be some sort of creative solution Pinterest for how to turn all of your childhood memories into a single decorative dish towel or something, right??
