Full disclosure: Hershey sent me these chocolates for free and paid me to eat them and then write a review about them (but all opinions are 100% mine). I can wait a minute while that one sets in…yes, someone actually had chocolate delivered to my door and gave me a really, really good excuse to eat it. I know, I know–my life is just incredibly awesome…be jealous for sure.

Simple Pleasures are the newest creation from Hershey. But these are not just your average chocolates: Hershey’s Simple Pleasures chocolates have 30 percent less fat than the average leading milk chocolates. While all the rest of you amazing postpartum moms seem to have the whole weight issue under control, this Mom of the Year is definitely struggling. So these lighter chocolates are a good thing. I can indulge in something sweet with a little less guilt? Sounds good to me! Think about how you would feel being able to eat chocolate (or any favorite food) and feel okay about it?? Pretty awesome stuff, huh?

Truth be told, we actually visited Hershey’s Chocolate World (watch for upcoming post about our fun trip to Hershey!) the day I was to receive the chocolate. They were doing a sampling of Simple Pleasures there, so I had a sneak peek before I even got home, but my husband had yet to try them. I decided to go all out: I set up a fancy spread in the ilk of a wine tasting (hey, I take my chocolate-tasting gig seriously). After putting the kids to bed, I snatched up my husband and we went to quick work officially judging these chocolates. They come in three varieties: Milk Chocolate with Chocolate Creme, Dark Chocolate with Chocolate Creme, and Milk Chocolate with Vanilla Creme. The synopsis: the dark chocolate was the winner–very rich and if you didn’t know you were getting a break in fat and calories (6 pieces for 180 calories), you wouldn’t have guessed. The vanilla chocolates were very sweet (which isn’t a problem for me, as I like really sweet stuff), reminiscent of a good coffee creamer. And the milk chocolates were not noticeably different from Hershey’s regular milk chocolate products.
Yes, okay, this is an endorsed post, but seriously, this is good stuff! Not only are the chocolates yummy for a good “calorie price”, it’s cool how Hershey is promoting this new product: they are “inviting you to celebrate ‘Sweet Independence’ this summer to enjoy delicious chocolate and feel great about loving it.” They are even putting out a Declaration of “Sweet Independence” on their facebook page, encouraging you to enjoy life’s simple pleasures and live a balanced lifestyle. They want you to sign this declaration, noting what you are declaring independence from this summer. My declaration? It would have to be from “encumberment” (yes, I’m pretty sure I just made that word up). I’m tired of feeling the weight of things and would love to just have a summer of lightness–and eating more chocolate sans the guilt would definitely fit in well with that goal! Thanks Hershey 🙂
