So, you may have noticed my 50 billion references in the past few months to the Summer Games. Not that I’m obsessed or anything…I have a long-standing love affair with the Olympics. Some of my fondest memories of our early marriage are from when we didn’t have cable and only got NBC in our apartment bedroom with old-school rabbit ears. For two weeks, we ate breakfast, lunch and dinner on our bed and watched the Winter Olympics around the clock. I’m not entirely sure what the draw is, but I’m guessing it’s a lot of pure adoration on my part of these people who push themselves so far body, mind and spirit. These athletes have a firm goal and work really hard to get it. It doesn’t matter whether it gymnastics, track and field, swimming or any other sport; it’s refreshing to witness such dedication.

I’m also in awe of the fact that for two weeks every couple of years, the world manages to come together. The Parade of Nations always makes my heart swell. The rest of the Opening Ceremonies? In short, screw Bejing, seriously, b/c they completely ruined the Opening Ceremonies from there on out. Did you see that show?? In general, The Opening Ceremonies can be pretty yawn-inducing (was anything worse than when they carted the covered wagons across the ice in Salt Lake?), but Bejing totally slammed it out of the park. Awe-inspiring. Sure, I’m hoping the best for London tonight, but honestly am doubting anything will ever live up to the bar China set…
And I won’t lie, I can work up a good cry with the best of them when Bob Costas and his crew start sharing the poignant tales of the athletes’ journeys. The sprinter who started to run to escape a life as a child solidier? Ouch…stories such as this rip at your heart, make you feel thankful for your life, and inspired not to let anything stand in your way.
In short, I’m in love. Will tirelessly fight my 3 yr. old for the next 16 days over why The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse will simply have to take a back seat. Hey, it won’t be pretty, but if the athletes can be such awesome warriors, I can endure a few battles of my own in the spirit of The Games. Happy viewing, my friends 😉
