I grew up on Hersheypark. Seriously, I think I was rocking the kiddie carousel before I could walk. Some of my most formative memories come from trolling around the likes of the Tilt-A-Whirl and the Scrambler. We lived so close, and season passes were just the way to go. So we went. We went a lot and loved it. My first job was working the kiddie ride circuit at Hershey. I could clean up kid pee from a ride with the best of them, and truth be told–the kids were actually pretty cute as they squealed with glee over the circling spaceships and dinosaurs.
Then I grew up and how cool was it that my sister and her husband got jobs at Hershey. My sister has since ventured into other professional fields (after 10 yrs. of dedicated service to our beloved Hersheypark!), but my BIL has made a career of this. Seriously, he is The Stuff at Hersheypark. Like, can get us on any ride in a matter of minutes (oh yes, we have it like that…!) . So last week I got to go back to this epicenter of my childhood and take my kids. This was so fun. We were truly Hersheypark Happy for the day. I won’t lie–a day at the amusement park with kids is no joke. As a parent, you are hopping–feeding kids, toileting kids, changing kids into swimsuits for the water area, loading them onto rides, whisking them off rides when the ride is too scary, hefting that double stroller all around the very hilly park…BUT–it’s worth it. When my son got off his first rollercoaster ride and begged “again!”, we were good to go. It was cool and there was a definite moment of feeling very Mom-of-the-Yearish coming through.
