“My Heart Breaks for You”

When my husband said these words to me, I knew were in this life together--for keeps. We are so far from perfect, but we do have a lot of love and support in our marriage. Go make this commitment to keep your own relationship thriving!One night recently, as we were drifting off into dreamland, my husband grasped my hand and said, “My heart breaks for you.”

If you know my husband, you know that he is far from cliche and far from saying anything lightly.  So given all that is going on with my family right now, this was the most romantic thing he could have said.

We may not have some fabulous candle-lit V-day evening planned, and we may have a whole lot of sloppily iced and poorly decorated heart-shaped cookies and candy hearts ground into our carpet, but I do have this reassurance: that my husband is there to walk with me through this and hold my hand when it gets rough.  And that, I think, is the best Valentine one could hope for…

    First of all I’m sorry. I know life can hurt dreadfully. To move forward, allow yourself the grief, because in a way a heartbreak is like a mini-death. It would be unkind to yourself not to cry the tears.

    However you can also remind yourself that just like the seasons, spring follows winter, and new love can occur even when we feel it impossible. It is important to be very kind to yourself, spend time around people that appreciate you, and remind yourself that although you may have loved this other person, it is wise to love yourself enough to attract someone else who can love you back.
