Just Keep Driving

Thanks to my friend S for reminding me of this particular phenomena.  You know how it goes–as soon as you are driving away from a place, you immediately think of all the things you should have bought/said/asked/done/etc.  The easy one (although still annoying) is when, immediately upon pulling out of the pediatrician office’s parking lot, you think of all the bajillion questions that any normal good mother would have thought to ask during her daughter’s 6 mo. appt.  But thanks to the power of the telephone (136 yr.-belated shout-out to Alexander Graham Bell here)–you can start psychotically stalking the doctor as soon as you get home.  Albeit, you may have to deal with some very grouchy secretaries and irritated nurses, but this is so much easier than having to actually physically return to the place.

The worst is Walmart.  Feeling very Mom of the Year-ish, you ace out your impossibly long list plus score some bargain finds to boot.  You somehow manage to pay for everything, load it in the car and buckle both screaming children into their respective car seats.  Sure, no one is happy and Mommy needs her nap, but no permanent damage done and victory can safely be declared.  You put your rockin’ minivan in reverse and a rare sense of peace washes over you, and then…OH CRAP!  Did you seriously just forget the-sweet-congrats-card-for-your-childhood-BFF-who-just-announced-her-new-pregnancy-and the-special-flouride-free-toothpaste-with-the-picture-of-the-happy-bear-on-it-because-it’s-the-only-“flavor”-your-two-year-old-son-has-deemed-acceptable-for-his-refined-palate???  But no way are you hauling everyone back out of their fruit-snack-bribed-bliss to trek back in there.  Don’t look back–start mentally composing your impossibly long list for the next time you can heist another glorious outing to Walmart and JUST KEEP DRIVING…
