The elephant in the room is, obviously, Days of Our Lives (popularly referred to DOOL on fan sites). And yes, I watch it and yes, have done so for (scary!) 20+ yrs. When I was 11, my friend’s mom used to spend her lunch break switching back and forth between The Young and the Restless and DOOL, and for some reason DOOL stuck and I’ve watched it off-and-on ever since. In my defense, I only ever watch it recorded and can easily burn through it in under 20 min. Not so much in my defense: I watch DOOL. Almost. every. day. For. 20+. years.
I think it’s the consistency that draws me in. It’s just nice to have a constant through all life’s stages.
The things that don’t change:
Marlena continues to battle the iniquities of the world in the form of Stephano
John still gets a weird blissfully-high-squinty-eye look and looks off to the side of the camera at the end of every clip
Stephano is Stephano
Sami finds herself in some sort of trouble and we’re supposed to feel bad for her b/c she’s Alison Sweeny, after all…
Jack and Jennifer battle over whether they will give into their passionate love and stay together or split over practical difficulties
Grandpa Victor is just down-right cool
Nicole is generally rotten but you still root for her and just wish you could somehow dress like her
Stephano is still Stephano
Vivian is still alive and still evil
Hope remains “Fancy Face” and also remains anorexically-scarily thin
Alleged death on DOOL does not preclude you from somehow magically returning to day-time in some form (i.e. Phillip was never actually killed, he was just sent off to a foreign country for some time and given a face transplant)
Face transplants happen
So do temporary gender changes
And finally, the #1 thing that never changes is Stephano. Yes, the Phoenix always rises!
For those of you who actually know what any of these notes are in reference to, please contact me–we will be holding our first DOOL support group next week!
