Here’s the deal: dressing children in winter gear to leave the house is a major bummer. Think Randy in A Christmas Story. Seriously, how much easier is it to just throw on sandals in the summer and be on your way? Without exaggeration, I figure coats, hats, boots, etc. can add 14+ hrs. to your morning routine. What slays me though, is that somehow my husband requires double this amount of time to get my son’s coat alone on. I don’t get it–sure it’s not easy, but basically you struggle him into the thing and you’re on your way. At this last snow however, my husband was gearing our son up for a sledding romp. After at least 15 minutes of grunts and groans, and “just hold still!”s, I figured he must be sewing him a new coat, so I went out to investigate. Nope, we were still just working on getting his hand through the first coat sleeve and into his mitten. Umm?? My husband’s response, “I want to make sure to get it on right.” Really? Really, does it matter that much? It’s not like my 2 yr. old son is going to be out writing sonnets in the snow or something (he can’t even write yet anyway). I say, just make a passable attempt at getting the mitten on in the vicinity of the hand and be on your way. In the meantime, if the Spidels are hours late or just don’t show up at some event you’re hosting this winter, you’ll know why–we’re still working on the mitten/coat situation…
