This is absolutely one of my least favorite things in the world about having kids. Taking them on an errand run can quickly upend an average crazy morning into THE. WORST. DAY. EVER. The most problematic for me is the grocery store, if you haven’t picked up on this. Sure, in theory those car carts at Giant are an awesome idea. Except that they are impossible to navigate around turns and you inevitably end up banging into some not-so-sweet elderly woman who acts all put out. Sure, this is judgmental, but can anyone argue that the quickest way to totally wreck a potentially successful shopping trip is to see the Freedom Village busvan pull into the parking lot, replete with all it’s 70+crowd, walkers and scooters?? I fully acknowledge that will someday be me, but have often thought there should be designated hours for elderly shopping…
I digress from my point, which is simply that trying to run errands with kids just sucks. My favorite is when other people glare at you while your children are throwing a fit/screaming/crying/trying to launch themselves from the cart. Please, as if I would willingly choose to put myself in this situation. One of the best gifts you could give your spouse this season is a night of running errands sans children. True story: one day a couple months ago, I had pulled off a coveted kid-free trip to Target. As the cashier was ringing up my infinite pile of diaper cream, toddler snacks and baby wash, the woman in line behind me gave me a gleeful look and said, “So you made it out without the kids too, huh?”. “Yeah”, I smiled sharing a knowing look with her. She then leaned in closer, to share a very excited secret, “Today is my birthday!” “Well, happy birthday!”, I said, “This is definitely the way to spend it, huh?” She could not hide the rapture that was breaking out all over her face…:)
