You don’t, plain and simple. While your first child never ate sugar until they were 16 and didn’t see a television set until they were well established in elementary school, I think my 4 mo. old daughter already has a crush on Minnie Mouse and is well versed on anything Disney…Sure, a perfect nap and eating schedule would be ideal, but if she doesn’t get there, OH WELL…you start to ask, “Does this really matter?” a whole lot more and the answer is,”No, not really” pretty much all of the time. So am I irreversibly screwing up my daughter? I’d like to think I’m just giving her a shot at a more normal, relaxed existence. As for my son, it’s too late. He will undoubtedly follow in the classic, neurotic, overachiever first-born steps of both his mother and father (both the oldest in our families). Poor kid…at least we can sleep easy at night knowing that we’ve followed most of the American Pediatric Association’s recommendations for his early years 😉 Do we get bonus points and are these somehow transferable to his teenage years??
