My anxiety about taking my son to his first dental appt. yesterday was through the roof, sleepless night beforehand and all (yes, I’m crazy). This was largely due to the fact that every time I stick my fingers in his mouth, he bites them, and bites them hard. I scream, then he screams–just a rather unpleasant event all around. Since I was taking my 6 mo. daughter along, I figured she would inevitably get upset at some point and start screaming too. Factor in the dentist and the hygenist, I figured we could easily round out at having 5 screaming persons in the exam room at once. With the bonus that we were late (shock, I know) and when we finally got there, I learned they “lost” our appt. and we would have to wait for them to “work us in”, I crashed on a chair in the waiting room sensing a pretty major disaster headed our way. In fact, mentally composing my next blog post in my head, I decided I would just title it “The Disaster.”
Then a really funny thing happened. I looked up from my stink. And noticed that my son was having a ball. Running from one very cool toy to the next and playing with the other kids…Dora rockin’ it out in the background with her very own child-friendly “viewing bench”…this place even had arcade games! Mmmhhh…so maybe not so bad? Then we actually met the hygenist, who can only be summarized as the sweet perkiness of Mary Poppins meets the loving patience of Mother Theresa. She managed to have my 2 1/2 year old ENJOY a full cleaning AND open his mouth through most of it. The dentist was positive, clear, brief (all important things with young kids). Then check this one out–THE RECEPTIONIST WAS NICE. Okay, so officially declaring a non-disaster and super stoked to now have a cheaper, more local alternative to Disney World. Bring on an extra 45 min. wait anytime. Only bummer–we can’t go back for another 6 mo. Too weird to take my daughter who doesn’t yet have teeth just so we can go back??
